Fellows in cohort 2019

I was born in Sankharapur, Kathmandu. I love travelling and dream of travelling the whole world. I also enjoy singing, dancing and research. Growing up, I have always been good at studies. My family members rewarded me frequently for performing well in the classroom, which motivated me a lot to study even harder. I had good family members who knew the value of education and were committed to provide me education. Likewise, I also had teachers who motivated me whenever I was struggling with my studies. I struggled during my second year of Bachelor’s but one of my teachers stepped in to help me to move forward. I will always be thankful to him.I am fortunate that I have had many people around me who inspired and motivated me. I came to know about TFN in the second year of my Bachelor’s. My desire to work for children appeared to align well with the vision. I remembered my family and teachers who motivated me and I decided that I would very much like to become motivators just like…

I spent my childhood in Kalikot, and later in Bardiya as my parents decided to move for better job opportunities. I have seen people struggling for survival. Most of them didn’t have access to good food. Education was not even in their priority list. During my teenage, I again moved to Kathmandu for higher education. Here, I learned to earn and live for myself. This experience made me stronger and more responsible. Coming to Kathmandu at a very young age, completing high school and undergraduate as a topper was a huge achievement for me. All the credits go to every single teacher who have taught me since my early childhood. This is one of the motivations to apply for the Fellowship, as I have always looked forward to becoming the role model to my students and making my students better learners and achievers. For the next two years, I see myself living in a rural village educating Nepal’s next generation. The one main reason behind joining Teach For Nepal is to see a transformed s…

Born as the eighth daughter in a family where struggle was synonymous with life, I have had to struggle for basic necessities. On top of that, I was bullied and harassed because my parents were physically and mentally unstable. Since an early age, I had to be the prime caretaker of my parents. Even though that was hard, learning to take responsibilities early on in life did help me come this far. I believe that when someone works hard with the determination to overcome difficult situation, one will always find people who are willing to support. In my desperate attempts to complete my education, Dr. Vinod Parajuli was my light of hope who provided motivation and financial support towards completing my Bachelor’s degree. While in college, I wanted to help other people going through difficult circumstances in life the same why I had. I established an NGO that worked towards empowering women. Moving forward, I see TFN as a platform for me to transfer my learnings and mindset to…

I was born in Kathmandu and brought up in Pokhara. I love traveling to new places, tasting local food and studying the lifestyle and culture. As a child, I was curious in nature. I was naughty as well and I used to do mischievous things. I remember I used to have a screwdriver with which I used to open everything that had a screw. I am close to both my parents and share my feelings with them. I am especially close to my mother who is always there to inspire and motivate me, whereas, my father is the one who I will always look up to as he has taught me not to be afraid of struggles. If a person has good education, I believe he/she can tackle all carious problems. Education provides the wisdom to distinguish between right and wrong, and also provide with confidence. I remember my parents struggled to a lot education. They did not want to send me to public school. I always wondered why they did for me. Later did I came to know that public schools were not viewed as providing quality e…

I did my schooling in a politically disturbed environment. The socio-political injustices of those times, when I almost lost my family members to the conflict, instilled in me the urgency to fix the conditions in my country. After graduation and some work experience, I needed a change, an opportunity to learn something new, to experience something different, and to absorb life as it is, for I was sick of clutching the support bar in a bus for two hours and wasting it amid traffic congestion in Kathmandu. My personal experience of injustices and expectation for change made me want to become a changemaker. If a student in this country sighs in pain, hurt and betrayal because she is studying in a public school, and a bleak and opportunity-robbed vision of her own future haunts her, then we are all guilty to her fate. The big talks will prove useless if we cannot get our acts together to solve this. This is what that has inspired me to apply to TFN. It offered the perfect platform I wa…

I was born in Lalitpur in a village called Ashrang. Lalitpur is believed to be a developed city compared to other districts of Nepal. But Ashrang and southern Lalitpur has a different story. We moved to Chapagaun later and went to a private school. While my friends were struggling in studies during Bachelor’s, I took a lead and helped them. That was the first time I realized the importance of group studies and guidance. Beyond studies, I engaged myself in multiple volunteering activities that expanded my learning and horizon. Having seen the quality of education our public schools provide in rural areas encouraged me to contribute my knowledge and skills to change situation. Personally, I felt that small efforts can be taken by all educated people to help end educational inequity. I am joining this movement to be a part of TFN’s work in leading the upcoming future generation towards good education quality and skills, towards being good role model, positive thinker, financially…

I am originally from Nalma a village in Lamjung. Although the time I spent in my village was short, I love my birthplace. The memories of going to the jungle for hunting, picking berries and swimming in the river are the most cherished memories of my childhood. With struggles, pain and hard work, my parents made sure that I was sent to a good school. I have to thank them for providing me with the opportunity. My father used to work overtime and still does so that he can cater to every demand of my family. His hard work and sacrifice have helped me achieve my dreams that is to complete a Bachelor's degree in Engineering and become the first Engineer from my village. Being an average student in my class, my teachers have played an extensive role in mentoring, guiding and motivating me so that I could live my dreams in the future. The hardships and struggles my parents and teachers went through cannot be explained in words. Their dedication has inspired me to give back to the commun…

I was born and raised in Bhaktapur, a culturally rich city. I used to really enjoy the alleys of Bhaktapur and miss times spent there with my childhood friends. I love dancing, trying out various cuisines and exploring places with my my friends and sister was really an average student at school. Rote memorization was used as the teaching method butI was very weak at memorizing things. This really bothered me as my interest in the studies lowered because of this. However, later in class 9 when I started feeling the urgency for better performance, I started to concentrate even more and got better in studies. With time, for my career, I realized that I am a people person and that working in closed room in front of a computer was not going to fulfill me. This led me to leave my job. I had always dreamed of becoming a School Principal and working with children as I wanted to contribute in the education. So, I chose TFN as the first step in learning more about children, school system an…

I was born and brought up in Indrachowk, Kathmandu. Like many kids, I also had many aims and aspiration which gradually changed. I wanted to become a doctor, astronaut, or a social worker. Among these, social work was at the top of my list. During my school days, I loved social studies. Reading the stories of Florence Nightingale, Dayabir Singh Kansakar and Mother Teresa really inspired me to become someone like them and do something for humanity. After completing my high school, I joined BA in social work. During my studies I realised that I loved teaching working with children from low socio-economic background. Later I worked as an English teacher in an education institute where I had to use interactive as well as a creative medium to make class fun for kids. With a degree in social work and love for teaching and working with kids, I felt like TFN will provide room for all of my passion and interest together. I joined TFN because I believe that all students deserve a quality e…

Until this year, there was no one in my family who had officially graduated with a university degree. I am the first in the family. My parents’ dream of educating me has always been a push factor for me to complete university education. Although I was a considered an average student, I have been engaged in various extracurricular activities and managed to win the best speaker award in a debate competition and have also bagged few trophies in volleyball competitions. Being raised in remote northern part of the country, Dolakha was pleasing but at the same time risky. During the devastating 2015 earthquake, I lost my house. My mom was severely injured in the earthquake. We had to bring her to Kathmandu for proper medical care. While I was running to the army camp to call for a helicopter, I realised what living in the rural part of the country feels like. I then promised myself that I would do something worthy to support people who are a similar situation as ours. With my…
