Fellows in cohort 2019

Being an introvert, I missed out on many good moments with my friends early in my childhood, however, the picture changed as changed my ways and invested in them through sports. My bonding with my friends later helped me get my first medal by participating in a Kabaddi competition. I started socializing even more and started having more fun with my friends and family after that. As a Fellow, I want to change the injustice students have to face in school, which I saw first-hand. I also saw the gap in the quality of education when I went from a public school to a private school for my +2 education. The first time I saw TFN’s advertisement, “What if your first job was changing nation?” I realized that I can be the teacher who could change the picture and help future students to dream bigger. Now having known the full vision of TFN, I also want to become a helping hand in this noble movement to lessen educational inequity in Nepal. Besides, I want to see things from a different perspec…

The level of poverty that I saw in my community was one of the things that kept bothering me as a kid. Seeing kids hungry on streets and loitering around, I thought of doing something for them. I shared that problem with my brother whom I consider my best friend in my family. Then we decided to open a tuition institution for young underprivileged kids in Bhaktapur to get engaged in something productive and help them to grow. Today, it makes me happy that the institution has turned into a music institute where children come to learn music. After completing my high school, I joined a volunteer organization. I used to deliver a 45-minute sessions on ‘Barriers in Studies’ to school students of class 6 and up. Today, when I look back at the voluntary work, I consider it as an asset of my lifetime because the journey that started from grade 6 has moved up to class 10 and number of sessions delivered has already reached 50. The initial idea of joining TFN came to me when I saw an advertise…

I was born with four other younger siblings with no fixed source of income. We had to initially rely on just our father’s income. Later when he had to leave his job, I worked as a part time telephone operator and as a night bus counter teller to support the family. Although we were financially struggling, my parents did not compromise on my education. My sister and I became the first college graduates in our family. My father was deprived of education due to family’s economic condition and had seen its drawbacks. So he had a clear picture that he was going to educate me and my siblings well. He has always been a big source of inspiration to me. My family and I have faced a lot of challenges in our life. Therefore, it makes me happy when I can make my parents happy with achievements, prizes of any kind or any shared moments. I was one of the toppers and later moved to India for higher education. Graduating despite financial difficulties was a proud moment for my family. After comp…

Education has always has been the first priority in our family, so my parents gave (me, my elder sister and my two brothers) the best they could for our growth and learning. During my +2 days I started to help my friends to understand different lessons and found it very pleasing experience to share the knowledge I had. Since then, I have been helping my friends from +2 and bachelors in different subjects and lessons. After working in IT sector for about 1 and half years, and looking at my past,I asked questions to myself, “Am happy from my life? Have I done anything to be proud of ? Have I been doing my dream job ?” And the answers to these questions were “no.” Asking this sort of questions to me by myself, now I have stumbled upon this platform of TFN that is giving me once in a lifetime opportunity to share the knowledge I have learnt with the students who are in the most need. As a Teach For Nepal Fellow, along with improving my leadership and communication skills, I will h…

Transferring from government school in Kavre to a private school was the best thing that happened to me. The appreciation my teacher gave me and their words are still my motivation, which make me feel that if I dare, I can overcome any obstacle. During school days, I participated in speech competition, led student activities and won multiple student leadership awards. Since my early childhood, I have dreamed of becoming a social worker and serving my country, society and people. I worked as a secondary level Mathematics teacher for two and half years. During this period, I had the chance to get connected to the students from different backgrounds to know their way of living and thinking. My eagerness to serve the nation and TFN’s ultimate goal of reducing inequity in education encouraged me to apply for Teach For Nepal. Besides this, running into the statement, ‘One day all children in Nepal will attain an excellent education,” touched my heart such that I wanted to join the moveme…

I consider my mother as my inspiration as I get to hear life-changing stories from her. Growing up, I used to tell her that one day I am going to be a newsreader because I loved their personality that was visible on the television sets. But due to my lack of fluency and clarity in language, I dropped the plan. That was the time when I realized about the hindrances anyone can come across when it comes to living the dream. I consider myself privileged to have been given the opportunity to attend one of the best schools and thankful to the parents who were always supportive. I am especially grateful to my mother who supported me in all of my decisions. She used to share her stories of how they were deprived of proper education. I compare that with the good education they have provided me with and that has helped me become the person who I’m today. While I was getting the best education, I was also aware of the fact that far in the rural villages of Nepal, children are not getting the…

I was born in Parasi of Nawalparasi in Terai region of Nepal. I was shy in nature and hardly spoke to anyone. The community where I was brought up didn’t have good health facility but the education facilities were rapidly growing. From my schooling days, I wanted to become a staff nurse. I was especially attracted by dress worn by nurses and their appearance and the services. As I grew older, I was more attracted towards social work. I was considered an average student till class seven. I never received special attention from my teachers. Gradually, I started speaking up and did open up a bit in class at secondary level. I also started participating in extracurricular activities. As a result I have been awarded in sports and elocutions in school. As I began to do well, teachers and friends around me began taking notice of me. My strong determination, support of friends and the desire to work in the field of children encouraged me to apply for the Teach For Nepal Fellowship. Add…

I feel like my life is very much inspired by my parents’ behavior. I share my feelings, emotions and secrets with my mother who I see as my best friend. While I look up to my father as someone who has played an important role in my self-development. He has a strong determination and willingness to learn new things; I really admire his qualities and I want to adopt those in my life as well. My leadership journey began during Bachelor’s. I gradually improved my interpersonal skills and began socializing with many people. This helped me strengthen my networking skills. My leadership did not only remain in studies, it was also seen in sports. I lead my college cricket team during tournaments. In the long run, I have a dream of working in my academic field. Artificial Intelligence is what I am most interested in at present. I have a dream of implementing artificial intelligence (AI) in agriculture in my nation. Good education plays vital role in one’s life. I am here today here …

I was born in Charikot, Dolakha and my parents moved to Biratnagar soon after I was born. I grew up there and I was sent to a private school outside Kathmandu valley which is similar to a government school. Growing up as an average student in school and college was not my choice. The most difficult time of my life was when I was studying in college for my Bachelor’s degree. I took several jobs like marketing executive and telemarketer to pay my college fees. My strong determination towards getting better education helped me move forward and graduate from college. I was not always fascinated by the way how teaching and learning spaces had been in our schools. One of the key motivations to join TFN comes from my own experience of being in such a classroom where the teachers were apathetic and a desire to change it. At least with TFN, I want to work towards changing the pattern with which a classroom runs. Ultimately, as a Fellow, I want to encourage more students to dream higher and…

I came to Kathmandu to begin my undergraduate studies. I got admitted at NR college, but unfortunately, I failed terribly in my exams the very first year. I was failing to balance my studies and family time as I was moving back and forth from Nuwakot. I was spending half of the month in Nuwakot helping my family to look after their farms, while the other half studying in Kathmandu. The frequent commute hampered my studies. I was mentally prepared to quitting college. But gradually, the scenario changed. One of my teachers suggested me to prioritize time for studies and work. I came to realize that if I can manage my time and my work, I can have control over most of the things. Later, I successfully completed my Bachelor’s. Since my childhood, my dream has always been to be a successful teacher in a public school. I got the opportunity of teaching after the massive earthquake in 2015. Along with a team of KOICA, I helped the community with rebuilding and teaching the students about …
