KaliDevi Secondary School 3

Kalidevi Secondary School is the closest school to Kathmandu partnering with Teach For Nepal. It is located in Malta, only 3.5 hours from Kathmandu valley and 3-4 hours from Hetauda. According to stories and narratives culturally and verbally passed down, the name of Malta village comes from the Newari word to meaning chilies asMalta village is believed to have been a chilly farm for the kings.

A majority of Tamang people live in the Malta village with few Brahmin, Magar, and Dalit households. Most Tamang families have migrated to the village from nearby hills. Similar diversity is seen in students in school as well. Currently, around 250-300 students are studying in classes 1 to 12.

Students from the adjoining Makwanpur district as well as the nearby villages attend this school. On average, most students walk for 2-3 hours to reach school. Fellows of Teach For Nepal, with the help of the school and ward, have made a hostel for the students. The hostel is led by the students which increases their leadership skills and managerial skills. JICA has also recently constructed two buildings for the school.

One of the major problems seen in Kalidevi School is the high dropout rates. 60% of the students do not attend the classes after admission. The value of education is not felt in the community leading to the young girls eloping and the boys going to big cities for work. There is also the lack of proper monitoring and leadership leading to the resources not being utilized efficiently.
