Fellows in cohort 2021

I loved playing games, watching cartoons and reading story books as a kid. I used to get all my homework done but wasn’t good at studying. One day, a teacher asked me a question which I couldn’t answer. Then she compared my studies with my sister’s and said that I was nothing like her. I started to study her subject seriously to prove her wrong but I realized that studying wasn’t that hard after all. The same year I scored 78% in the second terminal exam and it really hiked my confidence. When SLC was just around the corner, my father passed away. It left me emotionally and mentally traumatized but I didn’t give up studying. Earlier, whenever I scored good, I used to run up to him to show my paper and he used to compliment me. I could see that pride on his face. I thought I could still make him happy by studying hard and scoring well although he was no longer with us. My mother is a strong independent woman. She looks after the technical institute in Dang which my father had founded…

I was born in Mahendranagar, Kanchanpur district which is situated in southwestern Nepal. My family is engaged in farming. The highest academic degree earned in my family was SLC until I became the first member to graduate from college. I did my secondary schooling from a public school located in my hometown. The community there had a very supportive atmosphere and more importantly, people in that area were educated. My parents and community teachers are the most notable people in my life. My interaction with the teachers got very nerve-wracking at times but, I cannot deny the fact that they have always had a positive role during my life as a student. My first failure in life came after failing in English during my high school. My motivation to do well helped me succeed with good marks on my second attempt. Despite failing, I lifted myself up. This event instilled a feeling that I should never give up. My academic performance then subsequently improved while doing my undergraduate s…

I was born in Birgunj. My father has been working as an accountant for twenty seven years and my mother is a homemaker. I was enrolled in a private school in first grade and studied there till I completed my secondary level of education. The school gave off positive vibes and maintained a helpful environment. Even though my academic performance weighed on mediocrity, some of the school teachers helped me significantly with my growth and guided me along the right directions. Additionally, I came across a YouTube video depicting a student’s desire to study further but compelled to work after dropping out due to family pressure. The video is one of the events that triggered me to be where I am now. While studying engineering from Bangalore, me and my team members collaborated to work on a project named Rescue Robert with a purpose of serving as a helping hand during earthquakes, floods, etc. This was one of the projects which had never been made in our college before and we feel proud …

My parents were primarily involved in agriculture while I was young. They have worked tirelessly to ensure a better life and education for our family. After clearing his SLC, my father started a medical service at home. My mother made an effort to receive a society-based education and attended an institution for women education even after her marriage. She then began serving as a female healthcare volunteer at Tikapur Hospital. I had a hard time during my childhood but also, the best moments that couldn’t be cherished again. From household chores to agriculture, I used to help my mother and even go for Shramdaan. While in grade 7, I had to deliver milk twice every day and manage my class schedules accordingly. I helped my parents when anyone came to receive first-aid treatment at home. I therefore had chances to learn many things. The government school where I completed my SLC lacked physical infrastructure; there were no science or computer labs. Teachers enforced corporal punis…

Being the youngest child in the family surrounded by three elder brothers, I was given absolute freedom to do anything. It is the freedom that enables me to explore so many things and that is how I build my experience which I believe helps in understanding one’s life. Although my freedom came with a price, it has made me stronger. Since the beginning of my school life, I was fortunate to have my teachers’ constant support with me. Their motivation made my interest in mathematics, music, singing and writing possible. They were also forgiving and encouraging. This is one of the reasons that I have faith in education. I always had planned to contribute to the field of education in Nepal. During my study and work in India, I understood the importance of ICT and the impact it can draw towards education. When I was looking for an organization in Nepal working in the field of education, I stumbled upon Teach for Nepal. My dream synchronizes with Teach For Nepal’s i.e., every child in our c…

My parents have relentlessly supported me and my siblings, thereby preparing us to be strong enough to overcome challenges in life. It was possible only through their sacrifices to provide quality education for us, which cultivated good habits and rational thinking, making me duty-bound and responsible. As such, I fully understand the need for proper education and its significance in developing a community which ultimately inspired me to join TFN. The info session conducted by Teach For Nepal in my college, which was my first encounter with this movement, had a profound effect on me. It hit me hard when I contemplated the social injustices hindering the unprivileged mass from living a dignified life. And when everyone was busy criticizing and complaining about the education services of our government, this non-profit organization had a firm belief in transforming the education system by closing the existing void between the private and public schools. It gives me immense joy and…

My father is a high school graduate and has served as a former police officer. My mother, who is now a homemaker, had been abroad for more than 7-8 years so that me and my brother could attain a better education. My brother has been the most supportive person for my self-development because he always encourages me to have a better future. He has taught me to be focused on my career and become self-reliant. A good educational background has made me somewhat capable of becoming a mentor for myself for the right purpose. But my moral values have largely helped me to become the person I am today due to which I received several opportunities in life. There were supportive as well as bitter people along this journey but most importantly, I have learned to deal with people in a calm way without losing my patience. My first job was serving as a teacher at Nexus International Academy. In spite of working there for a short span, the love and respect I received from my students was really hea…

My father used to work as a laborer for a living when I was a child. He scantily manages to read and write but my mother bears no education. Because of our financial hurdles, I could not play with toys and video games like other children do. But my parents never made me feel bored or alone. I moved from a private school to a public one as our financial status weakened. That shift made me encounter a crucial difference between private and public schools i.e., the community’s outlook and treatment towards public school students. The community always used to dominate public school students. They conceived that public schools cannot offer a good education like private schools. The covid-19 pandemic was the most difficult situation in my life; it caused me to lose my job and dragged my family again into financial difficulties. However, we didn’t lose hope and decided to rear a cow to help us overcome the hurdles. I dealt with all the difficulties in my life with a positive attitude. Eve…

Although my birthplace was a small village in Gulmi, I spent three years of my childhood at an Army school in India. Those days intrigued me as I got to experience a culture quite different than ours from the village. I remember moving to a new school at Tamghas, Gulmi in eighth standard through a tough entrance test. Several families including mine had migrated to Tamghas from villages for quality education, better health services and a comfortable lifestyle. The community, however, was not that educated; some hadn’t completed schooling and some didn’t have a chance to pursue formal education. But most importantly, parents ascertained the need for education and sent their children to schools. I would be forever grateful for the day Pradeep Rai came into my life as an inspiration. He started working as a physiotherapist in my hometown and months later, I finally met him. His humbleness, his affection towards us and the respect he earned from the community inspired me to pursue bache…

I was born in a middle-class family in Kathmandu, the area around the airport to be precise. It is a labyrinth of alleys and gullies where I grew up cycling. I intend to return to my home no matter where life takes me so that I can give back to the community that made me. The school I attended was more like a family of merely 170 students. I stayed in the school hostel and we helped each other in everything from cooking meals to cleaning the school vicinity. My school reinforced my belief system and quenched my thirst for knowledge. Alongside, I feel very fortunate to have had the experience of family and friends embedded into my mentality. I was diagnosed with anxiety in the past which still affects me at times. I make decisions after a brief cost-benefit analysis in my mind. This strategy of decision-making leaves me less worried as I can opt for the optimal option. While I was in Dubai, I was working in a hotel industry where being unsocial was not at all acceptable. I had to s…
