Growing up I was a shy kid and often suffered from low self-esteem. But thanks to my father, I learned the importance of hard work and discipline at an early age. Although not the most outspoken person, I was a hard worker. In eighth grade during our English class, the teacher told us a story about a shy kid who couldn’t achieve anything in life because of his introversion. It was at that moment I realized I needed to overcome my shyness if I wanted to grab the opportunities that came my way. And from that moment I started to change myself for the better. This came in handy when I went to Delhi to pursue my Bachelors. The first few days I felt lost: I did not have any friends and family in the big city and often felt lonely in the crowd. However, I mustered up the courage and joined student groups which helped me come out of my shell and make new friends. My time in Delhi also taught me how inadequate we are as a country and how much we need to work in order to stand shoulder…

I believe education can come from different sources and not just books. During my free time I love watching anime. Anime has taught me things that no teacher or books has. It has enforced positivity and hard work in my life and has helped me find happiness in every little thing. The most important person in my self-development is my mother. My father and brother both work in Dubai. She has not only taken care of the house in their absence but has constantly supported me to fulfill my dreams. After completing +2, I was preparing to apply abroad but then the earthquake happened, and all my plans were put on hold. It was through my mother’s encouragement that I joined bachelor’s after a one-year gap. I have had many inspiring teachers in my school and college days. Their dedication towards their students and devotion in teaching has made a huge impact in my life. Since they helped me get a good education as a child, I want to do the same for someone else. If I can help make someon…

I was raised by my mother, who is a single parent. I have many fun memories as a child. I loved Saturdays because it meant both my parents would be home. My mother would cook up a feast and my entire family would sit together to watch movies. But in a way I have always felt that I had to grow up before my friends because I had the added responsibility of taking care of my two sisters while my mother was away at work. I was an average student but my mother believed I could do so much better. My teachers were friendly and with their help I steadily did better in my studies. A good base helped me get a scholarship to study in the US, which allowed me to explore my personality and my limits. In graduate school, I met some amazing professors who helped me understand what I wanted in life and showed me how to approach it. Growing up in Kathmandu, I am familiar with the sight of street children. Every time I saw them, I wished I could help them in some way. When I got to know more abou…

I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to go to Kathmandu for my schooling despite belonging to a farming, harsh mountainous background. And, working in Marpha after completing B.A. gave me a perspective on the education system in the villages. The thought and realization of quality education not being accessible to every child has always been in the back of my head. After four years in Marpha, I knew I had to look out for something new and greater for my growth. Above all, my experience in Marpha and my unusual childhood and upbringing in a boarding school encouraged me to apply for the Fellowship. I'm hopeful that these two years of Fellowship will help me grow both professionally and personally. Two years of Fellowship at Teach For Nepal will provide a broader understanding of the public schools in Nepal and help pave a path for me to pursue a lifelong teaching career. I will have the opportunity to work with like-minded people and have a great learning experience for me. Sin…

Until high school I attended public schools and this experience made me realize the plight of these schools and the sufferings of the students. I completed my Bachelors at a private institution after being provided a scholarship. I used to work but this fellowship pulled me away since I think this experience will pave my way towards creating a bright future for my country. My friend was the person who told me about this fellowship and after searching online I applied for it. There were moments of confusion because when I was offered the fellowship, I was also offered a job that would pay me double. However, I decided to accept this fellowship because I believe that investment in education will not only contribute towards my country but also help me in my long-term career growth. During this fellowship, I am enthusiastic to learn about the community and teach children while in return gaining life experience in rural Nepal. My fellowship goals are to increase academic achieveme…

I was born and raised in Bhaktapur, a culturally rich city. I used to really enjoy the alleys of Bhaktapur and miss times spent there with my childhood friends. I love dancing, trying out various cuisines and exploring places with my my friends and sister was really an average student at school. Rote memorization was used as the teaching method butI was very weak at memorizing things. This really bothered me as my interest in the studies lowered because of this. However, later in class 9 when I started feeling the urgency for better performance, I started to concentrate even more and got better in studies. With time, for my career, I realized that I am a people person and that working in closed room in front of a computer was not going to fulfill me. This led me to leave my job. I had always dreamed of becoming a School Principal and working with children as I wanted to contribute in the education. So, I chose TFN as the first step in learning more about children, school system an…

My family runs a hotel in Prithvi Chok, Pokhara. My father is a wonderful cook. When I was a child I was very influenced by chef and cooking show host Nigella Lawson. I would often pick up pots and pans from the kitchen and pretend to be on a cooking show. One of my proudest moment was when I got the main role in a music video that represented my village and my culture. More than me, my parents were happy and proud of me. I have always been a go-getter and I was very active in school. I love to be involved in different things and therefore while I pursued my bachelor’s in public health, so that I could work with the community, I am also a CTEVT certified beautician and beauty pageant choreographer. I chose Teach For Nepal because I believe working to end an education inequity is a noble cause. And I have always believed that my biggest achievement would be being able to transfer my knowledge and contribute to the society. Moreover living in a community, I will be able to explore…

I actively participated in the People’s Movement leading a Student Struggle Committee against the then King during my college days. Later, during the Madhesh Revolution I participated by taking a leadership role in the Rural Youth Front. Due to my political engagements, I went to the deathbed when I was 19. This incident changed my life and pushed me towards social service. My dream is to work for the betterment of society in order to end social injustice. I have seen so many injustices in my community such as child marriages, dowry, and illiteracy. I was motivated to apply for this fellowship but my father didn’t want me to join, as he wanted me to earn a lot or go for a government job. I had a hard time convincing him but I’m passionate about this movement. Through this fellowship, I want the children of my community to have a bright future, and the community to understand the importance of education. I believe that this fellowship will help increase my own capacity and then h…

My father worked in a private company which could barely cover the cost of our living but that didn’t stop him from making sure that me and my brother got the best education. He didn’t get the education he needed in order to get the job he wanted but for him, his biggest achievement was seeing me graduate with a mechanical engineering degree from JNTU university in India. My father went to Malaysia to work as a labor. He worked in a jungle and lived in a tent. He sacrificed three years of his life to make sure that me and my brother are an able person. After completing my bachelors’, I had many opportunities in the engineering field but I wanted something that would help me get the skills to lead people than being led. As a Fellow, I want to provide quality education to children of our country. I want to be part of the new Nepal where parents don’t have to go to a foreign country to provide for their family.

My life revolved around science, I wanted to become a scientist, I would watch sci-fi movies growing up, and I was certain that I would pursue science in the future. My prophecy came true and I found myself in an engineering college for my undergraduate studies. Despite being a science guy, I knew about the problems in the education system. Ever since I was a kid I had heard that private schools are better as opposed to public schools. Even in my neighborhood, I could see that the students that went to public school did not perform well in exams. Many of them failed the SLC exam and eventually dropped out of education. Devoid of education, foreign employment became the only hope for them. Seeing all this turned me cynical towards the public schooling system. When I first saw an ad for Teach For Nepal, I became curious to know more about the teaching conditions, outcomes, and student problems in public schools. When I leafed through TFN’s prospectus, the idea became clearer. I felt t…
