From Virtual Challenges to Classroom Triumphs: A Science Fellow's Remarkable Journey of Connection and Empowerment

By Nabina Giri (Tanahun)

In the pursuit of providing an enriching education to students, my two-year Teach For Nepal Fellowship has been a transformative expedition, both for myself and for my students. It has instilled in me a profound understanding of the significance of practical learning experiences and the vital role of teaching methodologies that seamlessly connect with real-world applications.

I guess the true measure of knowledge is not what we know but how we apply it to make positive difference in the world.

My Fellowship encountered its fair share of challenges, the biggest one was the sudden onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. It necessitated an abrupt transition to online learning. Even for an experienced practice teacher from a learning institute, adapting to the digital landscape presented daunting hurdles. At first, establishing a virtual connection with my students was already a big enough challenge, but through perseverance and determination, I witnessed progress over time - my school, just like the rest of the world were urged to reconsider and leverage digital innovations.

As the months passed, I observed a remarkable transformation in their ability to actively engage in online classes, which, in turn, bolstered my own confidence in the art of teaching and learning. I must admit that both me and my students were not used to online learning and so we shared a common challenge. I realized that teaching through online platforms was a challenge mostly because of lack of non-verbal cues which I was used to promote learning, a useful tool for effecting teaching as my yearning to forge a deep connection with each student seemed elusive. Nevertheless, we persisted.

A turning point arrived on September 26, 2022, when we finally returned to the physical classroom. The heartwarming reception I received from my students moved me to my very core. It was a moment of profound realization that no matter the obstacles we encounter, the power of human connection and in our case - of the immersive classroom experience is hard to be replicated.

I had decided to join the Teach For Nepal Fellowship after completing Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical), from IOE, Western Regional Campus and having been motivated by my parents' sacrifices and a strong belief in the power of education. Having witnessed social injustices and the gap of quality education, I was personally inspired by Teach For Nepal's mission to transform the system. For this I was committed in guiding students towards a better education, ending educational injustice, and inspiring personal growth.

Throughout my Fellowship, my dedication has been directed towards fostering growth and development of my students. While academic achievement is undeniably important, I have steadfastly believed in the concept of holistic education that transcends the confines of textbooks and traditional teaching methods. To this end, I have strived to create an environment that encourages experiential learning, providing my students with ample opportunities to actively participate, engage, and reflect - Field trips, guest speakers, captivating experiments, and a myriad of other activities have certainly kindled a deep love for learning within them. I am also proud that my students have also broadened their horizons and cultivated a multifaceted perspective of the world.

While my reflections may highlight non-academic accomplishments, I firmly assert that these experiences play an integral role in the overall growth and development of students. By nurturing their innate curiosity, fostering critical thinking skills, and instilling a resilient growth mindset, I have endeavored to shape well-rounded individuals who possess the fortitude to overcome any challenges that lie ahead. This, after all is the purpose of education.

Beyond the realm of professional growth, my Fellowship has also been instrumental in my personal development. A surge in self-confidence has empowered me to assume leadership roles within the community, actively engage in professional development opportunities, and participate in various workshops. Interacting with diverse groups of individuals, including students, teachers, and community members, has bestowed upon me, a profound understanding of the challenges they face. I learnt that these challenges could be overcome by collaboration and teamwork - invaluable tools in achieving shared goals and aspirations.

With profound gratitude, I reflect upon the multitude of opportunities that the Fellowship has presented me. I drew from wisdom imparted by the Fellow whom I succeeded, guidance of my co-fellow to gain valuable insights into the unique characteristics and learning needs of the students who were under my tutelage. All this provided me a transformative experience that broadened my horizons, equipped me with indispensable skills, and fortified my resolve to excel in future endeavors. Through introspection, reflection, and continuous evaluation, I have become more self-aware, recognizing both my strengths and areas for improvement. By setting clear goals and adapting strategies based on student feedback, I strived to create an enhanced and effective learning experience.

Looking back, I take immense pride in the numerous events and projects I organized during my fellowship - from coordinating educational exhibitions to collaborating on climate change initiatives, I have expended relentless effort to provide my students with enriching experiences. Science lab renovations, participation in awe-inspiring astronomy camps, and eye-opening career exposure trips have all contributed to expanding their horizons and igniting a fervent passion for learning.

However, it would be a remiss to overlook the social challenges I observed in this journey. My students were no just children, but individuals grappling with intricacies of life. Student absenteeism, dynamics within the staff room, and the lack of motivation stemming from weak foundations and challenging their family circumstances, all demanded careful attention and innovative solutions. Addressing these obstacles necessitated effective communication with parents and guardians, identifying the root causes of academic struggles, and fostering a supportive and collaborative school environment.

Nevertheless, my collaboration with the school staff, co-fellows, subject leads, and other stakeholders proved to be invaluable. Their unwavering support and guidance have propelled my growth as an individual and an educator. Together, we have worked towards two core student visions: facilitating education and skills development, while also nurturing their potential to become positive role models within society. By motivating students to embrace education and enhancing their leadership abilities, collaboration, communication, and co-creation skills, our collective aim is to shape them into beacons of inspiration within their schools and communities.

As I conclude my reflections, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude for the remarkable opportunities that the Teach For Nepal fellowship provided me. The progress I have witnessed in both myself and my students serves as a testament to the transformative power of education. Now, more than ever, I am determined to continue making a tangible difference in the lives of my students, empowering them to forge meaningful connections with academic concepts, and equipping them with the critical life skills necessary to transcend the confines of the classroom. I believe, together, we possess the ability to empower the next generation, fostering a legacy of positive change within our society.
