The enforcement of lockdown to prevent the outbreak of COVID-19 has negatively impacted students with limited resources in the rural areas of Nepal. During this time of crisis, Teach For Nepal (TFN) has decided to commence a radio program from July 20 (Monday) - five days a week, in the nearby districts where the Fellows have been placed. The main objective of the radio program is to continue the learning process of their students. 

TFN, since its establishment, has been placing Fellows as teachers in public schools located in the remote communities of the country. The vision to provide quality education to students, even during the time of the pandemic, has led TFN to announce an organizational radio program- ‘Ma Sikdai Chhu,’ during the soft launch event on Thursday. 

”According to the survey conducted by our Fellows during the initial days of the lockdown, approximately 35.25% and 60% of students had access to cable television and radio at their houses, respectively,” says Swastika Shrestha, CEO of TFN.  She explains, With the results presented by the rapid survey conducted right after the lockdown, our Fellows concluded that more than half of students have access to radios at their houses. Thus  a program broadcasted through radio would be the most effective way to continue our students’ learning.”

As part of the pilot project, this eight-week program will be on-aired through local FM stations in 7 districts, where TFN Fellows are placed. The program will be broadcasted in Parsa and Southern Lalitpur in Radio Birgunj; Sindhupalchowk - Radio Melamchi; Dhanusha - Radio Janakpur; Lamjung - Radio Marshyangdi; Tanahu- Radio Damauli and Dang - Radio Prakriti.

”Every session of the radio program is designed to be suitable for students from grades 5 to 10. The learning content will be presented in a form of radio drama focusing on building foundational skills in English, Maths, and Science, thus making the program very interesting for students.”, says Ruma Maharjan, who is leading the radio project. “We have also recognized the emotional roller coaster that our students are going through at this time, which is why we have added a counseling session along with a platform for students to express themselves.”, she adds. 

The program has given greater emphasis to subjects like English, maths, and science, along with psychosocial counseling and promoting lockdown diaries of students. It will eventually work as a remedial course to a lot of basic concepts that students in public schools usually have regarding English, science, and mathematics. 

Since the lockdown, TFN Fellows have been reaching out to students through phone calls and social media for continuing the learning process in every way possible. One of the Fellows  Prashant Gnawali shares, “We can't wait for everything to get better. As teachers, we felt the responsibility to do something at this time to keep connecting with our students and addressing their learning and psycho-social needs.” 

The content of the program has been designed by the TFN Fellows in collaboration with British Council, Meeting Point, TFN Alumni led initiations like My Emotions Matter, and Katha Express. The program is produced in the technical assistance of Radio Audio and The Record House.

सुरु हुने भयो टिच फर नेपालको रेडियो कार्यक्रम “म सिक्दै छु”

कोभिड १९ बाट सिर्जित बन्दाबन्दीका कारण अधिकांश बिद्यालयमा पठन पाठन ठप्प भएको स्थितीमा टिच फर नेपालले विद्यार्थीको सिकाइलाई निरन्तरता दिने हेतुले रेडियो कार्यक्रम सन्चलन गर्न लगेको छ । 

नेपालका  ग्रामीण क्षेत्रका सार्वजनिक विद्यालयमा आफ्ना प्रज्ञार्थी  प्रदान गरि सार्वजनिक विद्यालयको गुणस्तर उकास्न र शैक्षिक समता प्रदान गर्दै आएको  टिच फर नेपालले बिहीबार एक कार्यक्रमका बीच “म सिक्दै छु” नामक उक्त रेडियो कार्यक्रम उद्‌घाटन गरेको हो । प्रज्ञार्थीहरूले तयार पारेको उक्त कार्यक्रममा अङ्ग्रेजी, विज्ञान, गणित र बाल मनोविज्ञान र अतिरिक्त ॠयाकलापसँग सम्बन्धित कुराहरू प्रसारण गर्ने जानकारी दिएको छ  भने कार्यक्रम आउँदो  सोमबार श्रावन ५ गते देखी औपचारिक रुपमा प्रशारण हुनेछ   ।

उक्त रेडियो कार्यक्रममा विद्यार्थीहरूलाई मनपर्ने किसिमबाट सिकाउने हुनाले विद्यार्थीहरूले रेडियो कार्यक्रम रुचाउने कार्यक्रम संयोजक रुमा महर्जन बताउँछिन  । रेडियो कार्यक्रम रेडियो नाटकका रुपमा प्रसारण हुने र एकै अङ्कले कक्षा ५  देखि १० का विद्यार्थीहरूलाई सम्बोधन गर्ने बताइएको छ। कार्यक्रममा बालबालिकाको लेखन प्रतिभा सुधार र उजागर गराउने आयोजकले बताएका छन् । बन्दाबन्दी अवस्थामा बालबालिकाको मनोविज्ञानमा पनि असर पुग्ने हुँदा मनोबिज्ञान परामर्श बारे जानकारी दिन हप्ताको १ दिन विद्यार्थीका भावना र कथा साट्ने प्रकारका कार्यक्रम पनि समावेश गरिएको महर्जनले  जानकारी दिनुभयो ।

“हामी सबै कुरा राम्रो हुने प्रतीक्षा गर्न सक्दैनौं। शिक्षकको हैसियतमा हामीले यो  समय आफ्ना विद्यार्थीहरूसँग सम्पर्कमा रहन र उनीहरूको शिक्षा र मनोसामाजिक आवश्यकताहरूलाई सम्बोधन गर्नुपर्ने दायित्व महसुस गर्‍यौं। ” रेडियो कार्यक्रममा संलग्न टिच फर नेपालका प्रज्ञार्थी  प्रशान्त ज्ञवालीले बताउनुभयो ।

कार्यक्रमका बारे प्रकाश पार्दै टिच फर नेपालका प्रमुख कार्यकारी अधिकृत स्वस्तिका श्रेष्ठले ग्रामीण भेगमा रेडियोको पहुँच बढी देखिएकोले ग्रामीण विद्यार्थीहरूलाई मध्यनजर गर्दै कार्यक्रम तयार पारिएको बताउनुभयो । “लकडाउन को सुरुवती दिनमा हाम्रा प्रज्ञार्थीहरुले गरेको सर्वेक्षणमा उहाँहरुले काम गर्ने  जिल्लामा करिब ३५.२५% टेलिभिजन रहेको र करिब ६०%  विद्यार्थीको घर घरमा रेडियो भएको थाहा भए पछि यो रेडियो कार्यक्रम गर्नु पर्छ भन्ने प्रज्ञार्थी को सुझावलाई हामीले मनन गरेर रेडियो कार्यक्रम निर्माण गर्ने  निष्कर्षमा हामी पुगेका हौ” उहाँले बताउनुभयो ।

उक्त कार्यक्रम हालका लागि टिच फर नेपाल कार्यारत ७ जिल्लाका १५ गाउपालिका र नगरपालिकाका ८ वटा  रेडियोमा प्रसारण हुनेछ । उक्त कार्यक्रम दक्षिण ललितपुर र पर्सामा रेडियो वीरगन्ज, रेडियो विजयवस्ती, सिन्धुपाल्चोकमा रेडियो मेलम्ची, धनुषामा रेडियो जनकपुर, लमजुङमा रेडियो मर्स्याङ्दी, तनहुँमा रेडियो दमौली र दाङमा रेडियो प्रकृतिबाट प्रसारण हुने बताएको छ । कार्यक्रम बारे थप जानकारी कार्यक्रमको फेसबुक पेज (https://www.facebook.com/Masikdaichu/) मा पाउन सकिन्छ ।

कार्यक्रमको पहिलो चरणमा विज्ञान, गणित र अङ्ग्रेजीका आधारभूत कार्यक्रम हुने जनाइएको छ भने उक्त कार्यक्रमले सार्वजनिक विद्यालयमा विद्यमान आधारभूत तहमा देखिएको कमजोरीहरुलाई  एक हद सम्म सम्बोधन गर्ने  जनाइएको छ  ।
