Shree Secondary School (Sohani Mujhelia)

The women of Sohani Mujhelia in Dhanusha district have been deprived of many opportunities. Firstly, early marriage is very popular in the community. When girls are married off, they drop out of their schools; they don’t even study till Grade 10 to prepare for SLC examinations. Due to the lack of proper education and skills, they cannot pursue any job so they have to be compelled to live their life at the mercy of their husbands. Another social issue is dowry system. Since it has been the tradition that the more educated a girl is, the more dowries her parents need to provide for the equally qualified bridegroom, parents don’t allow their daughters to pursue higher education. However, this scenario is changing and number of girls is increasing in schools lately. Same is the case with Shree Secondary School, too.

Ram Swaroop and Ram Sagar initiated the establishment of the school in 2014 BS (1957 AD) so that children of low income group would also get access to education. Classes were run till Grade 5 initially. Currently, the school has been educating 700 students from ECD to Grade 10. SLC Pass Percentage of 2014 AD was 22% (only 9 out of 41 students passed).

A total of 23 teachers are teaching the students. TFN Fellows has been placed there since 2015 AD and Pratik Ghimire, Anuva Upreti and Binita Subedi are the current Fellows.

The school has 4 toilets; 2 for the staff and 2 for students. It lacks big enough playground, science lab, library and computer lab though the school owns 5 desktops. Desks/benches aren’t enough for the students, either and the classrooms have no whiteboards. Out of the 10 classrooms, 2 were damaged by the earthquake. The estimated annual budget of the school is Rs 35 Lakhs and most of the funding comes from Nepal Government.

People are mostly engaged in farming, labor works and small businesses like grocery shops. Rice, pulses and seasonal vegetables are the primary agricultural products. They go to the nearby Aurvedic hospital for medical facilities. Mujhelia Police Station is there for security and the area has proper telephone (mobile) services. A dairy has been established and drinking water is drawn from tube wells.

You can first reach Janakpur by bus, Tata Sumo or flight and the school is 2 km away from there.
