Shree Ratna Secondary School Manpang 1

Shree Ratna Secondary School Manpang 2

Named after Queen Ratna Rajya Lakshmi Devi Shah, Shree Ratna secondary School was established around 2015 B.S. The school was established after the Queen visited Manpang and surrounding areas and saw the need for a school there, so children from surrounding areas can have access to education without having to travel from very distant places.

The school is about 165 km from Kathmandu. The population in the community is about 150-200 people. The majority of people in the community are Gurung, making up about 50% of the population. 25% of the population are Magars and the rest of the 25% is a mix of other castes, mainly Janjati/ Dalit. The majority of the people are Buddhists and Hindus with some Christians.

Shree Ratna Secondary School is the only secondary school in Maygde-6. Students travel from villages as far as three hours away to study here. There used to be a high population of about 500 to 600 students in this school before. However, the number of students has decreased to 134 due to the migration of people towards the highway. Only four to five people in the community have received undergraduate education. Therefore, there is a lack of local role models of education in the community. Thus, most students drop out, mostly male students to start work as either drivers or laborers abroad.

Although, cellular networks available in Manpang in most areas, the connection is not very strong. There is no wifi available in schools or areas surrounding the community. The school currently has two buildings. There is another building in construction near to the current location of the school but the school still lacks a computer lab, science lab, and playground.
