After democracy was instated in the nation, many schools and formal educational institutions started gaining their pace. In Dukuchhap Village of Lalitpur too, the case was the same. Some local people in the village in 2016 BS (1959 AD) started tutoring children in Mr Lok Bahadur Pokharel’s house. Because of the frequent requests from the District Education Directorate of Lalitpur, Shree Ganesh Secondary School was established. Named after a Shree Ganesh Temple, the school’s classes were held at the founder Principal Mr. Mayurdhoj Pokharel’s house and later got a new space.

With the funding from the VDC, the school started its secondary level since 2064 BS (2007 AD). Initially, only one teacher taught at the school. Now there are 18 staffs, 17 teachers and 1 Office Assistant.

Electricity, mobile phone, toilet and drinking water facilities are available. There is also a brick factory in the area. The school possesses 9 computers but not all of them are in proper condition. Due to lack of proper space, computer lab, science lab and library all are run in one room. There are sufficient desks and benches for all students though the furniture is not child friendly. Almost all the classes have whiteboards. Some boards were damaged by the earthquake, though.

You can get a bus from Lagankhel Bus Park that will take you to Dukuchhap Village. Get off at the stop named Khahare and a 15-minute walk will be needed to reach the school.

Earthquake Impact

Two of the blocks where primary classes and Grade 6 were run were damaged. Out of the 10 classrooms, 6 were damaged. So the classes are being conducted elsewhere, like rooftop and balcony of the main building.

However, many individuals and organizations are generously supporting the school. Nippon-Nepal Goodwill Association (NNA) provided the school with thrush block, three cemented blocks, doors and windows, colors, 40 sets of desk, benches, and also cupboard and chairs. Patan Rotary Club, RHEST and Looniva have been providing scholarships, teaching materials, stationeries and various trainings for the students and also teachers. Room to Read has helped with books for the school’s library. After TFN Fellows started teaching in the school, it has achieved a remarkable SLC progress, 85.71% students passed this year’s SLC, and 100% passed in English. With the help of TFN, UN-Habitat, Coca-Cola, ENPHO the toilets and drinking taps were built. TFN has been providing the students and the school staffs rations for mid‐day meal after the earthquake. Personalities like Vice Deputy Director of Education Department, Vice DEO and Public Affair officers of The US Embassy have visited the school, providing a regular exposure to the wider world to the students. World Vision International, Don Bosco Institute and CWIN have helped students by providing Temporary Learning Class (2 classes), provided bags and stationeries and have been helping students to form Child Club respectively.
