Jyotidaya Co­operative Secondary School

Established in 2054 BS (1996 AD) by a group of enthusiastic youths, Jyotidaya Co­operative Secondary School is managed by a council with representations of teachers, community members and former and current students. The school first started with the pre­primary level and then gradually moved toward secondary level. It has had to face several financial crises in the past as there is no government funding and the fee structure isn’t too high either. However, looking at its current pace, the school is likely to be upgraded as a high school soon.

294 students (140 boys and 154 girls) are enrolled from ECD to Grade 10. The students come from diverse ethnic backgrounds including Newars, Brahmin, Chettri, Tamang and others. 90% of the population constitutes of Newars. Agriculture and Foreign employment are the major sources of income for the people and most of them are engaged in mushroom farming.

8 male and 14 female teachers are there. 5 of them are part­time teachers. TFN Fellows started teaching in the school since 2013 AD and current fellows are Seetu Shakya and Bhawana Shrestha.

The school has hostel facility for students preparing for SLC examinations. The pass percentage has been 100% in the last 3 years.

There is one community health post, half a dozen of private schools, one public school, one police station and some brick factories in the area. Drinking water and communication facilities are easily available. Facility of toilets is good. Male/Female toilets are available for students. Electricity is available from national grid. There is a playground and badminton court for the children. Library, science lab, Math lab and a computer lab with 5 computers are available. The school is facilitated with enough benches for the children and whiteboards are there in every classroom.

NGOs like ECCA, ENPHO and Gen Nep have established various clubs for the students. Estimated annual budget of the school is Rs 13,00,000.

The school is 7 km away from Ringroad as is easily accessible as public vehicles are available.

Earthquake Impact

Most of the houses in the community collapsed. Some classrooms and furniture were damaged. The school has 27 rooms and 24 are used for conducting classes. 3 of the classes have been damaged.
