Shree Janabikas Secondary School is located in Nursery, Sangachok-09, Sindupalchok, which is over 68 km away from Kathmandu. It was established in 2032 BS (1975 AD). 6 primary, 2 secondary and 4 lower secondary level teachers, 2 non-teaching staff and 3 Teach For Nepal Fellows are working at the school.
Initially, the school ran classes from Grade 1 to 3. It was upgraded as a lower secondary school in 2054 BS (1997 AD) and after 10 years it finally started conducting classes up to Grade 10. Students appeared in the SLC Examinations in the year 2065 BS for the first time.
A total of over 230 students is enrolled in the school currently.
Students belong mostly to Brahmin families and many are Dalits and Janajaati, too. The family members work as farmers, migrant workers or laborers for earning their living.
After the devastating earthquake, the school building was completely destroyed. Hence, the school had to demolish its two stories building. Fortunately, the half of the school building that was only single-storey; it was still in good condition. It had five rooms in total. So, after the earthquake whole school had to be adjusted in those five rooms. Initially, one room was used as a staff room, one as a store room and other three were used as classrooms which had a high number of students and for other classes, the school had to run them in tents. After some months, with the help of financial and physical resources from various organizations, the school was able to build Temporary Learning Centre (TLC) consisting of 6 rooms. The classrooms were still insufficient and also since the school couldn’t depend on TLC for long period of time, so with the help of financial aid from the individual donors and funds raised by a TFN fellow, a semi- permanent structure consisting of 6 rooms was built afterward.
Currently, two of the classes have still been running in TLC, 6 classes have been running in semi-permanent building and an ECD class, staff room, computer lab and library, staff canteen, store room is running in the main building.
The school has one library and one computer lab which are running in the same room due to inadequate space. The computer lab consists of 10 desktop computers. Mostly, 2-3 students have to share a computer while performing tasks. We have a big playground where students mostly play football and volleyball. But the school doesn’t have goal posts.
There is a scarcity of water in the school. Since the school lies in the middle of the jungle, there are no sources of water nearby. So, the whole school has to depend on the water from the pipeline which doesn’t come regularly. So, students are encouraged to bring the water bottles from their home.
