Bagbhairab Higher Secondary School, Kaleshwar

Located in Kaleshwor VDC in Lalitpur District, Bagbhairab Higher Secondary School was established in 2022 BS (1965 AD) as a primary school. It was eventually upgraded into higher secondary school in 2062 BS (2005 AD). Initiated by Giri Prasad Dulal, the first Principal, the school has an enrollment of a total of 188 students (90 boys and 98 girls) in classes up to Grade 10 while 55 are enrolled in +2 levels. TFN Fellows have been placed in the school since 2013 AD and Rabi Maharjan and Rupsha Nakarmi are the current fellows. The SLC Pass Percentage In 2071 BS (2014 AD) was 95.65% (which was 68% the previous year and increased as the TFN Fellows started teaching in the school).

20 teachers including the fellows are working in the school out of which 15 are male teachers. These include 14 permanent teachers, 1 Relief Quota teacher, 2 ECD teachers, two private teachers, two TFN Fellows and one Office Assistant.

Mostly Hindus, Buddhists and Christians live in the school’s catchment areas. The families own animals like cows, buffalos and goats or cultivate vegetables and crops for livelihood. They do business of maize, potato, pumpkin, cucumber, milk, ghee and meat (chicken and buffalo). School enrollment rate among children is 99%.

Regarding services in the vicinity, there’s a Health Post and a Police Station 1 km far from the school. The area has no access to landline telephone. CDMA, NTC and NCell services are available though. Food mill and Wood mill are also located 1 km away from school. The area has sufficient access to clean drinking water, available directly from the source in the forest. Students drink water only after it is filtered. Toilets are available both for male and female students as well as teachers. The school is 58 km away from Kathmandu and is accessible by bus and an hour walk or milk/vegetable truck.

The environment is pleasant with ponds and forests. There is a playground for children to play volleyball, table tennis, badminton and basketball. There’s a library but it doesn’t have sufficient books. A Science lab also has been built but hasn’t been managed properly. The computer lab has four computers including one for official purposes. Students are involved in clubs like Nature Club (in association with ECCA) and Junior Red Cross Circle.

10 classrooms are made of blocks while 2 are concrete. 24 rooms are available, out of which 20 are used for office and classrooms. The annual budget of the school is estimated to be Rs.1,00,00,000 (approx.)

There is a School Management Committee as well as Parent Teachers Association in the school. There has been 1% Student Dropout Rate. The students come to school from places that are near (within 500 m) and also as far as 7km (Gotikhel, Kavre or Chandanpur) as there is no hostel facility. Lunch provision for students of Class 9 and 10 has started recently.

The school was adversely impacted by the April 2015 earthquake. 5 blocks/10 classrooms were damaged. The school faced a loss of 50 benches, 5 whiteboards and 6 low beds. Carpets of primary classrooms and two toilets were damaged.

No student/teacher lost their lives in the earthquake but most of the houses in the area were fully damaged and are in need of reconstruction. The earthquake had adverse impacts on more than 300 houses and casualties including cows, buffalos, goats and birds. Food mill, wood mill and religious places also have been affected. The area also suffered from landslide.

The school possesses 173 benches for the students out of which 60 have been damaged. All the classes had whiteboards but five were smashed. Out of 13 classrooms, 10 were damaged. Solar Panel and Meter Box were damaged. 5 Blocks or 10 Classrooms need to be built and 60 benches are needed. Cupboards, whiteboards, low beds, doors and windows need maintenance. For relief and support, UNICEF has built toilets and supported on stationery and sports materials. ECCA has provided Water Filter for Kaleshwor VDC househsolders and scholarships for deserving students. TFN has provided students with bags, stationery and Mid-day Meal. DEO’s Relief Fund amounted Rs 1,00,000 for rebuilding and Rs 550 for each of the students for school dress. Looniva provided stationery materials (note books and scholarship).
