When I was small, my mother made sure that I excelled in my studies. She even kept a girl in our home as a domestic worker, so that I didn’t have to work much and could concentrate in my studies. But it didn’t seem right to me even then. I would teach her whatever I learnt at school just like my teacher would with chalk and duster. It was our playtime as well as studying time. It was perfect, I thought.
Another disparity I felt in my family was between me and my brother. He was sent to a more expensive school as my parents felt he would take care of the family in future. It’s not that I didn’t like the school I and my other brother were studying in; I wanted to study in his school because the teachers there didn’t give much punishments to students, unlike our teachers.
My parents thought that since I got good grades in SLC I would take up Science in +2 and pursue to become a doctor. But I chose to do Journalism in my Bachelor’s instead with dreams of bringing change in my society. I was asking myself, “Am I capable of bringing a change?” I started observing my society, started meeting people, started understanding their lives. This is when I met my best friend, Rick, who gave me the confidence to find resources in chaos. Born in Texas, he was 40 years older than me. He said that he dreamt of being the first person to land on Mars, he became an air-force pilot instead. He left the air-force because of war in Vietnam and then his country to study history of art. Since then he has been bumming around, painting the beauty and chaos of this world and lots of apartment walls to make a living. He was inspired to create the phrase ‘resources in chaos’ because of Nepal. I could communicate ideas and thought that I had never done with anyone which eventually inspired me to build my own way, go my way and lead my way in spite of all the obstacles. I am glad I joined TFN as it will give me a platform to do just that.
All my life I wanted to do things that made difference, no matter how little it was. On the other hand, I love teaching. I spent two years in a little village of Solukhumbu trying my best to bring justice to the village through knowledge and education. I aspire to become an excellent teacher, a community leader and a trustworthy person from the fellowship. After two years, I plan to teach in a government schools of Nepal, probably in Solukhumbu. I want to setup libraries and encourage children to read books rather than limiting themselves in their textbooks.
