My name is Shirijung Hang Rai, or ShiriXonga Hang. I was born in Lalitpur but started my school life in Bhaktapur. My mother remembers my first day of school life his way: “A very excited, restless child, dressed in white, hair combed, photos taken saying goodbye to his mother, only to fall in a muddy pit and ruin the day.”
As a child I was very obstinate and restless, but I never had issues regarding my studies. I’m a student of Development Studies and English. I grew up aspiring to be in the army.
But today when I have conversations with my mother regarding careers and life, I can see her happiness and satisfaction, and I feel that my life is meaningful. I would be proud to become a good son to my mother, if not the best.
I have a strong love for my country and the rich history and culture we inherit. I have always wanted to do something meaningful for my country. I was just looking for an opportunity that would let me do so.That’s when I first encountered TFN and I am so glad that I did. I think the desire to do something for my nation - that hunger, passion, confidence, and stubbornness – led me to apply.
I am fun loving person. I like to make everyone laugh. When I finally got selected my family members, relatives all were happy for me. Now I am really excited to enter a new phase of my life. I’ve a platform to start off my dream. Many youths including my colleagues and friends pursue their dreams abroad or in town but I (we) are going to teach students in community schools, in remote areas. In the next two years of fellowship I really look forward to learning a lot. When Shisir sir asked me what my future plans were, I said “Social engineer”. He said, “Explain.” I said,“Social mobilizer”. He said, “Explain,”and finally I said “Something with great impact for the society.”
After TFN, or 5-10-15 years, I don’t know what exactly I’ll do – but whatever I do will be with all of my knowledge, passion, confidence, and determination. Work honestly, be kind, be a giver and try to live for others: this is what I learn from my parents. I want to live that life, a respectful life. That’s my goal!
