Education: B.Ed (Mathematics), Mangal Multiple Campus, Nepal

I am Rabi Maharjan from Chobhar, Kirtipur-14, Kathmandu. I was born and grew up in Chobhar in a small family, and I live with my mother and sister. I completed my SLC and +2 from public school and college, as well as my B.Ed (Mathematics) from Mangal Multiple Campus. I spent my childhood living within the limitations of low economic conditions. I have a keen interest in playing musical instruments. I was also a top student in the school.

Up to this point, I would say I am most proud of being a Nepali and I’m proud of being an honest person. And of course, I am proud of being a TFN Fellow. The two other achievements that made me happiest were when I passed the SLC in high first division from a government school and completed my B.Ed. in mathematics from a public campus with top marks. Before I came to know of TFN, I was not so clear about my goals and vision towards my country. I was not satisfied about the quality of education given in Nepal. After seeing the vision of Teach for Nepal I’ve become very glad that there’s someone who is ready to take our country far away from the current reality of inequality and inequity in education. This is what I want, when I really think about the inequality of education of Nepal.

My vision towards my country and my personal goal about to serve my country led me to apply. My vision and TFN’s vision seemed to match. This was the first time I had come across a group talking about our nation’s education inequality and inequity. Now I’m really very confident that my decision to join to TFN was right for both me and my nation.

I initially thought that TFN and its movement would definitely lead our country to a better position in education. It’s going to end inequity and inequality in education. I thought it would be a non-profit organization that would support the nation in its education sector. But during the course of selection, I came to feel that it was a great thing that TFN was going to do for our nation. I realized that there was no one I had come across who thought or cared about the quality of education in Nepal. During training I have felt so lucky that Teach for Nepal saw the potential in me.

Most people, including my friends and relatives, asked why I had applied to Teach for Nepal, even though I was already a teacher. Many people recommended that I not become a teacher but I totally disagreed. My family’s main concern was that they didn’t want me to be far away from home. I decided to join because as a citizen of my nation, it’s my duty and responsibility to serve. So as a B.Ed. graduate, I want to serve from the sector of education.

I have more than four years of teaching experience in public and private schools. I’ve seen this inequality of education between the two. But with respect to the students and school where I will teach, my biggest source of excitement is that as a TFN Fellow, I’ll be a transformative teacher and a leader in teaching.

As a TFN Fellow, my only concerns at the moment are about school placement and results after two years. Will I be a transformative teacher? Can I positively change the behavior of students? These are the questions on my mind. My passion and life’s aim is to be a great teacher, a transformative teacher. And I’m sure that these two years of the TFN fellowship will help and guide me towards this goal.

Let's stay in touch.
