Home: Kathmandu, Kathmandu, Bagmati
Education: BA-BSW, Xavier International College
I was born and raised in Kathmandu and basically spent my entire school life in a hostel. I felt like I obtained a good education from some of the best schools in Kathmandu. I was fortunate enough to have teachers who guided me throughout my school life.
I am proud of the fact that I led a team of students organize my college’s first social event. We raised funds and donated clothes and materials to three different organizations. We were the first group to support Children Affected by AIDS (CABAs). We also supported Maryknoll (Asha-deep), an organization working for mentally challenged people and Navajyoti School, a school for mentally challenged children.
As a social work student I also volunteered with Blue Diamond Society (BDS), Federation of Sexual and Gender Minorities Nepal (FSGMN) and Sexual and Gender Minorities Student Forum Nepal (SGMSFN). I later became the group leader of student interns/volunteers who organized the first Essay Competitionon LGBTI issues and helped manage and co-ordinate volunteers for the First LGBTI National Games.
I was working with Swastika Shrestha at Anuvuti International when I came to know about TFN from Shisir Khanal, the CEO of TFN.
My first reaction was “this sounds amazing.” I was interested in Teach For Nepal’s concept of selecting outstanding youths of the nation to help develop the academic sector of the country. The thought of being in the same group as them excited me. I understood what this meant to me and my country.
I was always sure that I wanted to do the Fellowship. My family always believed that I would get selected so I was excited and nervous when the news finally came through. I joined Teach For Nepal because I wanted to be a part of a solution to a problem rather than just a spectator. I have visited some of the schools where our first batch of Teach For Nepal Fellows are teaching so I am fully aware of the conditions that I will have to live in for two years. I am excited most about the challenges that I will face and the opportunities that I will have with the students.
In the future, I see myself working towards bringing improvement to marginalized groups and probably even joining politics. My life’s goal is to be able to stand against all types of injustices and provide opportunities for people who have potential, but have yet to come across opportunities to bring it into action.
