I grew up in what one would deem a typical Madhesi household in Biratnagar. Women weren't encouraged to speak nor were they taught to dream big, or for that matter, dream at all. There was a lot of friction between my father and me, and our relationship was very strained. In fact, right after high school, he wanted to get me married. It was as though reasoning with him was impossible. He felt the need to be right about everything. Although I was afraid of him, I gradually built the courage to question him, go against his values, and prove him wrong. Now, my father and I share a close bond, and he's open to hearing a woman's point of view.
Although I've always been an introvert and keep mostly to myself, I've never let the deep desire of serving society die out. I chose science as a stream during high school due to family pressures but I stepped up for myself and chose a course in social work for my bachelor's degree. As someone who belongs to a marginalized community, I'm cognizant of how lucky I am to have received an education. The boys in the family are always given priority and sent to schools, so they can eventually lend a helping hand in the family business. The same is not the case for the girls.
Education inequality is one of the biggest problems plaguing our country and without equal opportunities, we can't expect to grow. Education forms the base of future prospects and with Teach For Nepal, I will take as many steps necessary to reduce education inequality. The Teach For Nepal Fellowship is a unique opportunity for me to develop leadership skills while lending a powerful impact in the education system in Nepal. I thoroughly look forward to this challenging, rewarding, and competitive journey.
