Fellows in cohort 2023

I grew up in what one would deem a typical Madhesi household in Biratnagar. Women weren't encouraged to speak nor were they taught to dream big, or for that matter, dream at all. There was a lot of friction between my father and me, and our relationship was very strained. In fact, right after high school, he wanted to get me married. It was as though reasoning with him was impossible. He felt the need to be right about everything. Although I was afraid of him, I gradually built the courage to question him, go against his values, and prove him wrong. Now, my father and I share a close bond, and he's open to hearing a woman's point of view. Although I've always been an introvert and keep mostly to myself, I've never let the deep desire of serving society die out. I chose science as a stream during high school due to family pressures but I stepped up for myself and chose a course in social work for my bachelor's degree. As someone who belongs to a marginalized community, I'm cognizan…

I have come to realize that personal growth and development is a journey that requires an open mind and a willingness to learn. This realization was hard to swallow, but it has been transformational for me. Growing up in a middle-class household in a village called Thankot under Chandragiri, I was a curious and mischievous child. My love for science has been a passion of mine since childhood, and I pursued it until my graduation. As I continued to explore my interests and passions, I came across Teach For Nepal and its vision to provide quality education to children in need. I was fascinated by the opportunity to connect with wise and like-minded people, learn from new experiences, and contribute to the movement of making the future of children in Nepal safe and better. That is why I decided to apply for the Fellowship. As a TFN Fellow, I am committed to breaking out of my comfort zone and actively contributing towards the movement of creating a brighter future for children in …

From a young age, I have always been passionate about education. Growing up in a small village called Dapcha in Kavrepalanchok, Nepal, I witnessed firsthand the power of a good education in transforming lives. Despite the challenges that my parents faced, they instilled in me the importance of learning and encouraged me to work hard to achieve my dreams. As a result, I was a dedicated student and consistently earned top grades in all my exams. One of my early ambitions was to become a teacher, and I am thrilled that this dream has become a reality through the Teach For Nepal Fellowship. I believe that the role of a teacher can be life-changing for students, just as it was for me. I was fortunate to have inspiring and supportive teachers throughout my academic journey, including a physics teacher in high school who pushed me to excel and helped me realize my full potential. As I reflect on my own experiences, I am struck by the power of education to open doors and create opportun…

While I may not have had the most thrilling childhood, I was fortunate to have found solace in my school and teachers who became like a second family to me. Attending a government-aided and community-run school, I strongly believe that every child should have access to a safe and nurturing learning environment where they can thrive and be their true selves. My education has been the cornerstone of my personal and professional growth. It has not only taught me textbook knowledge but also instilled values like hard work, perseverance, and grit. When financial obstacles threatened to hinder my pursuit of higher education, my mother's unwavering support and my academic achievements led to a scholarship, proving that dedication and effort do pay off. What drew me to Teach For Nepal was their mission to provide practical education to students in rural areas and government schools. I want to be a part of this cause to change societal norms and inspire my students to achieve their full …

Growing up, I was never the smartest kid in the classroom, but I understood the value of a good education. It's what opened doors of opportunity for me and helped me gain the confidence to pursue my dreams. However, I realized that not everyone has access to quality education, especially those in rural areas. My interest in education grew further when I personally experienced the impact of misdiagnosis and mistreatment of mental illness in Nepal. It's a topic that is still considered taboo in our society, and it's time we start talking about it openly. Through cognitive behavioral therapy, I found a way to manage my own mental health, but I know there are many others out there who are struggling silently. That's why I want to become a Teach For Nepal Fellow - to work towards creating a safe and supportive environment in schools, where students can learn, grow, and thrive. As a Fellow, I aspire to be an agent of change in the lives of struggling students in public schools. I look…

Family means everything to me. When my father was diagnosed with Covid-19, it was a difficult time for my family as we struggled to find hospital beds and had to treat him at home. Even though I also contracted the disease, we faced it together as a family. It was a reminder of how important family support can be, especially during tough times. My parents have been my guiding light, and I owe a lot to them. Growing up in Pokhara, I was always fascinated by technical things and loved to take apart electronic devices to understand how they worked. I pursued my passion and now have a degree in civil engineering and a license to practice. I am determined to contribute to the development of Nepal's infrastructure. As a child, accessing education was a challenge, and I had to walk over an hour each day to reach school. However, I am grateful for the opportunities education has given me, including personal growth and self-dependence. My parents always wanted a better life for me, and I…
