Fellows in cohort 2021

Having a single parent and three younger sisters, I wasn’t like most of the children. I had to bear the responsibility of my sisters as my mother often used to go out for work. Her struggle and my sisters’ hopes aided in my self-development. I could also encourage my sisters to fight for their dreams and not to be confined within societal boundaries. When I was a student, teachers motivated me to dream big and supported me to achieve my goals. I regard my chemistry teacher from college as my inspiration. Although his teaching methods weren’t vastly different from others, he knew how to communicate with the students and impart his learning in an easy and understandable way. His style of approaching others and his career journey inspires me to be like him. To accomplish my goals, quality education made me capable to make the right decisions and choose the right path. Living with family around, I never experienced how it feels to be independent and a leader of my own decisions. I …

I have six members in my family. My mother has studied till fourth grade and is currently running a shop. Perhaps the fear of stepping out of my comfort zone was something that I found grueling to overcome. But I embraced such fears with a belief in myself and by making myself stronger. Such experiences have enhanced my personality and also helped me to explore my communication skills. I feel like I am still learning and have a long way to go but the transformation that I have witnessed from how I used to be to what I am now makes me proud. I have worked as a volunteer/ peer educator in a few organizations. International Citizen Service became the most significant catalyst for my self-development. This journey has changed me and my vision towards helping the society and nation. It yielded more strength, confidence, kindness in me and instilled the feeling of being a responsible citizen and bringing the change as a youth by working and learning with a diverse group of people. The dec…

I was born in Lalitpur and have lived my whole life there. I have completed my basic education from AVM higher secondary school which is located in the same city. It hails as one of the oldest and prestigious schools of Kathmandu valley. My father enrolled in Fine Arts for his undergraduate program and is currently working as an artist. He is the man behind instructing me about responsibilities in life. My mother attended school till she completed SLC. but later She is a homemaker and proficient at vocational tasks although she doesn’t take it up professionally. She has expressed her utmost solicitude all her life. In my childhood days, I was shy but not that difficult. I dreamt of becoming a pilot and taking my mother to travel around the world. Even though that ambition didn’t gain any momentum, I believe that I can still fulfill the dream. I follow Vipassana meditation and it helps me in relaxation all too often. I usually practice meditation twice a day for an hour each. My int…

When I was five years old, my mother passed away. My father works as a labourer in Malaysia and my stepmother works as a house help in Dubai. I spent my childhood living in a hostel. Reminiscing about my childhood days, I was labelled as a good student but was also full of mischief. One of my memorable experiences as a kid was waiting for the hostel father to return back with candies for us. As a sponsored child, I have always had a desire to help those in need. My sponsor has been the most crucial figure in my life and she has also helped me to realize the person I would love to become. She has been my role model ever since my childhood. The school from where I completed secondary education was callous, so much so that some of my friends suffered from depression and anxiety. My high school education, in particular, has helped me to understand the education system better. By this, I am not indicating that the education offered in +2 level was any different from my school but it …

While most of my childhood friends attended private school, I went to a government school. It wasn’t equipped with a library, computer or science lab due to which I couldn’t gain practical knowledge. Nonetheless, my academic performance always stood out better than theirs. I invested more time in my studies than extracurricular activities. All this way, my sister has encouraged me to study hard, be independent and to face new experiences. After SLC, I decided to study nursing but our weak finances couldn’t afford the high fees. I then joined Commerce at Shree Ganesh Bahumukhi Campus. To support my study and family economically, I began teaching when I was a first-year undergrad. I had never thought of being a teacher nor was I interested in it. But I did my best to enrich my students’ knowledge and started enjoying this profession steadily. The Covid-19 lockdown made me worry about my students. I was terrified, wondering what if my students forget everything that I had taught them. …

I was born in the town of Birgunj which is an important hub for the country’s economy. During the 90s, the internet hadn’t evolved and keypad mobile phones were rare. It was only when I was eight or nine years old that my father first bought a keypad mobile. I used to play a snake game on it which I used to enjoy a lot. My father never forced me into anything nor did he scold me or my brother for our failures. He has inspired me to always look for the brighter side of life. I was relying on my parents for living even when I was on the verge of finishing my school. That was why I enrolled in college far from my home so that I could learn to manage basic activities like doing the laundry, cooking, spending wisely, etc. My stay in a hostel enabled me to live life on my own and to become independent. We live in a very dynamic world and good education prepared me to keep up with the world and adapt to all the changes. I have become more wary of the latest technologies, thanks to good ed…

My father has graduated till high school and works as a mechanic in Bahrain. He had to work really hard to feed and educate us and meet other basic amenities. My mother could only complete secondary education but her perseverance in every struggle and her determination have made my family stronger. I had always wanted to build my career keeping Mathematics at the core of it. I was accepted to pursue B Tech with a scholarship offer from Indian Embassy. During the course of my major project in eighth semester, I along with two other students were assigned in a team to complete a simulation-based project. We had slowly begun working on it as we were unfamiliar with the tool used for the project and were discovering different parameters. 15 days prior to the deadline, we had completed only half of what we had promised to accomplish. To make matters worse, one of my project members was admitted to hospital for dengue. After I started handling simulations in two computers and on a system i…

Born in Kalaiya, Bara, I lived in an extended family consisting of twenty-six members. I had a simple childhood but there was a time in the past when it became difficult to even feed all the family members. My father works as a mechanic and businessman. I used to work with him in his workshop when I was nine-years-old. I learned welding and repairing bikes, trolly, lathe machines at the workshop. This is one reason that got me interested in the engineering field. I enjoy reading e-books related to technology, skill building, HVAC, car engine maintenance, and bike assembling manuals in my free time. As I had a large family and our income status was bleak, I had to join a government school where I completed my basic education. There was a custom of tuition classes in my school. I didn’t have money to pay for tuition fees hence, I self-studied and never joined tuition during my entire school period. I was weak in Mathematics in ninth and tenth standard. Even then, I couldn’t afford the…

I was born in Pharping, Kathmandu. My family runs a small Thangka art industry and is also involved in agriculture for livelihood. Compared to other communities, my community had a very high literacy rate. Although social issues like: smoking, alcohol consumption and superstitions prevailed, the people there were conscious about the importance of education and emphasized more on their children’s learning. My childhood was quite different and difficult from the rest of the kids. I was the caretaker of my home and before I could leave for school or play, I had to get all the household chores done. I feel proud of my academic degree and what I have achieved till date because I am the first from our family who has completed her SLC. When I started working as a private school teacher, I faced several challenges due to my academic qualification from government school. I felt ashamed as I was not good enough to teach English despite having graduated with a major in English. But I overcame…

I was born in Lalitpur and my village is located in Dolakha. My parents moved to the capital in search of better opportunities. Even though visiting the hometown was a rare occasion, the ambience of the village area fascinated me more than that of the city. I was brilliant in sports, especially football. Chess and badminton were my favorites. Despite having a mischievous demeanor as a kid, I was never weak in studies; someone who was sharp in Mathematics and scored highest in the subject from his school during SLC. I never followed rote learning but built a proper understanding of anything I learned. Being informed about Nepal’s politics interests me and I am fond of learning about constellations and the universe. Several individuals and incidents have had a meaningful role to play in my personal development. Those individuals and incidents are fictitious quite so often. Luffy, a protagonist from One Piece (anime), abiding by the philosophy of living to the fullest so that we don’t …
