Fellows in cohort 2021

I had a very blissful childhood. I used to indulge myself in reading children’ magazines like: Muna and Kopila. Growing up, I always dreamt of becoming a pilot as airplanes fascinated me a lot. Nothing excited me as much as the sound of airplanes flying above. I used to imagine travelling on an airplane anywhere at any time if I were a pilot. The obsession with it grew so much in me that I used to nag my mother to take me to the airport on Saturdays. The school that I attended had its hostel nearby. The school hostel had a dog and I was once attacked by it while having lunch. The bruises on my face were so deep that the scars are still visible. During the initial months of this incident, I used to despise myself looking at the mirror and even avoided attending school. It had profoundly affected my study and confidence but my teachers and parents advised me to disregard the scars and helped me to restore my confidence. My mother has always supported me in every step I take and never…

My parents never had an opportunity to attend school. They have been following traditional farming methods till now. I am the first member from my family of six to complete post-graduation. Having spent most of my childhood in agricultural farmland to support my family, I had dreamt of becoming an agro-businessman when I was in eighth grade. Unsatisfied with the traditional farming method, I used to draw an imaginary sketch of years and the number of people who can benefit from modern farming. The community from where I attended secondary schooling was not forward in education. As the majority of the students belonged to the Newar community, they had difficulty in grasping subjects offered in the Nepali medium. Farming accounted for more than 50% of the communities income source and community schools catered to maximum girl students since the boys were sent to private schools. While pursuing my undergraduate in Biotechnology, I had struggled with financial instability. To topple …

I completed my basic and secondary education from Birgunj. When I was in fifth grade, I moved to another school as my parents were determined to provide us with better opportunities for schooling. I was a studious and disciplined student who feared her teachers. I always thought my grades were my highest accomplishments therefore grades were everything to me. I had decided that my report card should be shining with good grades since my future will be decided by it. While I was in school, I studied only for grades. I am not sure if I studied because I understood them all or I was trying my best to win the rat race. While pursuing my Bachelor’s degree in India, I flunked one of the subjects due to which I was asked to stay back during two months vacation for the re-exam. The stigma around failing the exams is very distressing. All the teachers hold negative opinions about students they see in the college at the time of the vacation. It gets very challenging to be focused and determin…

My hometown is located in Janakpur of Dhanusha district. My father received his education till tenth standard whereas my mother has not received any formal education. They are now running their own business for a living. I completed my basic and secondary education from a private school. Although I was an average student at school, I was very fond of reading books which had now become a getaway for me for relaxation. I later pursued Science in my high school degree. I remember myself as a child with a shy nature. Now that I have turned away from my introverted nature, my approach of socializing and getting along easily with people has been misunderstood. This has led to ill-intended perceptions being built about me and that experience has afflicted my personality. Although I was sent to a private school, from the perspective of the community I belonged to, it wasn’t necessary for daughters to be sent to private schools. The discriminatory practices that I witnessed in my community …

As a child, I was very quiet and disciplined. I lacked the mischievousness, which is otherwise evident in children of my age. My uncles say that I was very inquisitive and asked questions they had no answer to. At one point, I got interested in the military and wanted to become a spy. Later when I was old enough to make decisions, I found science to be a better career option for me than the military. Securing admission at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and qualifying in Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) are the major accomplishments that I am proudest of. IIT was a dream that I had never thought would come true. GATE is probably the only exam that I cleared solely based on my retained knowledge and without studying. The decision to drop out of Army School has totally changed my perception of success. It made me more resilient and ceased my fear of failing. Had I not dropped out, perhaps I wouldn’t have been where I am today. The IIT dream might not have been ful…

I completed my schooling from a public school. Having attended a public school, I faced humiliation and subjugation by the hands of my own friends who, on the other hand, had studied at a private school. They held a perception that the students from public schools are basically worthless. That experience prompted me to bridge the gaps between private and public education and its students. When my friend mentioned Teach For Nepal for the first time, I was really amazed. I then tried to gather more information about it through their website and Facebook page. I was intrigued by their motto that envisions, “One day all children in Nepal will attain an excellent education.” The movement’s remarkable work in the education sector encouraged me to apply for the Fellowship. My first meeting with Teach For Nepal was wonderful. I still remember my interaction with Anu Karki, who had an encouraging personality. Her kindness and friendly nature aided in strengthening my confidence. I want to e…

I was born in Thecho which is a small village located in Lalitpur. Around 200 households settle there and a mixture of various cultures and ethnic groups binds the village together. My father has completed secondary schooling and is working as a supervisor. My mother on the other hand, has never attended school. She owns a clothing store and can be found working there. Overall, most of my childhood hovered around music, sports and hanging out with friends. I was very much into sports and music. When I represented my school in an inter-school solo singing competition, I emerged as a winner. Despite the victory, my proudest accomplishment would have to be the one where me and my team worked on a water supply project by building a reservoir tank and an individual tap stand in Gorkha. My motivation of making an effort to invest my time for the nation made me apply for the Teach For Nepal Fellowship. I have a zeal to contribute something for my country and I am positive that Teach For N…

Ever since my childhood, I was very straightforward about raising my voice towards injustice despite knowing that it will have little to no impact. However, I came to understand that serving humanity matters the most. I enjoy reading books related to absolute truth, watching spiritual documentaries, meditating, listening to spiritual talks and podcasts, etc. I truly believe that my spiritual master Shree Trikuta Nand ji has been the most important figure for my all-round development. Since the day I began trying to follow his teachings, I can feel my perception and sense of understanding have really broadened. The education that I have received has shaped my thoughts and perception of the present education system. I think it has made me observe things as they are without any judgments. Some of the teachers have also set pretty good humane examples not just by words, but by their actions too. Amala George from my college taught us Operating System, which was a theory subject but he…

I don’t exactly remember how I was as a child but my mother remembered me as being very quiet and obedient. Losing her left me totally devastated and I couldn’t figure out what to do next in life. I was a teacher during those hardest time of my life but I kept myself occupied with my students and their studies since that was where my mother wanted me to be. “Provide what you have acquired as knowledge to your students.” This line always echoes in my mind and I still find her answer very relevant to overcome my most difficult time. I thought of changing students’ outlook by making them understand that teaching too is a better profession to help establish good leaders for the nation. I wish to see the positive change in everyone I come across, be it students, strangers or anyone I meet. The teachers at my schools from whom I have gained knowledge were also my role models. They were always positive regarding my studies and behavior. Watching them teach, I have always wondered how it fe…

I spent most of my childhood in my hometown Bhairawa before joining school. As soon as the winter vacation would start in December, I used to visit my hometown and spend the entire period with my paternal grandparents. At school, I was a confident student and full of life. I always mention how we formed the first girl’s band during school days and made it historical. I also feel glad about encouraging girls into sports during my undergrad. Although not major triumphs, these involvements have made me an active person. My school had a comfortable classroom where the teachers created a beaming and positive learning environment. My teachers taught me more than just academics. They have helped me develop important life skills to tackle different situations. They were one of the reasons why I loved school. During my final semester at the university, my confidence and faith were withering away after appearing for two interviews. I had envisioned myself at the top but when the time arrived…
