Fellows in cohort 2017

I was born in a small hill station (Darjeeling) in India. Before moving to Nepal with my family, I studied in Darjeeling till Grade two. Moving to Kathmandu was a huge change in my life. In the beginning, I found it challenging to fit in with my classmates. But soon, my willingness to try new things and part-take in all the activities helped me gain friends. I was always a high-achieving student, so I never had any problem academically. My parents never had to persist me for education because they were aware of my value for education. After passing School Leaving Certificate with distinction, I studied Humanities in Einstein Academy. I first heard about Social Work as a subject while I was in +2 and my interest grew towards it. So, after finishing my +2, I pursued Social Work in my Bachelor’s level. This time, I started learning more about the society we live and I started getting inspired to pursue a career in Social Work. After college, I decided to work as a psychosocial cou…

I was brought up in a society where women are considered inferior to men and are not allowed to work outside the four walls of the house. But my parents were aware of the value of education and made sure I got the best of education. My parents even moved to Kathmandu to make sure that we were able to get an excellent education. Since high school, I was very much intrigued by mathematics and was always looking for different ways to understand math concepts. My love for math led me to Advanced College of Engineering and Management where I graduated with a B.E. in Electronics and Communication. Graduating with an engineering degree was not easy because there were countless sleepless nights when I had to work hard to achieve success in the subject matter. My parent’s motivation always helped me to give my best. Throughout my Fellowship, I want to use my experience of private tutoring to help students learn fundamental of maths. Being a private tutor for three students made me realize …

Born in a middle-class family on the outskirts of Patan, I graduated from Caspian Valley College with a degree in Business Studies. As a student, I was in love with the English language. I used to read books in English every time I got the opportunity. I fell in love with writing and conversing in English. My English teachers were my biggest motivators and all the credit goes to them for who I am today. My brothers and sisters have always supported me in all walks of my life and I cannot thank my parents enough for all the support and love they have given me. As a student, I always dreamt of becoming a teacher who would use expressive stories and use literature to help students write stories and communicate effectively. Throughout my Fellowship, I plan not only to be a teacher but also to be someone that inspires her pupils, to give their best. I knew about the power I had in me to inspire people when I presented to a mass in an assembly. I want to be a teacher who transforms th…

I have always been curious about the functioning mechanisms behind the many objects we use in our daily lives. At school, Physics and Math have always been the subjects that I found the most intriguing and I excelled in them. This encouraged me to pursue a career in engineering. During my college, I met students who had studied in public schools and had burning desire to achieve success but faced di culty in using computers or English language. That didn’t stop them. Their curiosity and passion for learning made them better than most of the students in the class. This made me realize that everybody has the potential to learn as long as they are exposed to the right environment. After being selected for the Fellowship, I also got to intern at Teach For Nepal. The internship made me realize that anyone can be a motivator or a teacher to another person. During my Fellowship, I want to work on integrating technology into the classroom to get students engaged and enthusiastic to learn a…

My sister challenged me, “You have all the potential to do anything but you cannot achieve anything unless you give it a try.” She pushed me to explore myself and carry a positive outlook. As a result, although I started as an average student who often felt challenged at school, today I am proud that I am the first family member to have completed my Bachelor’s degree. The Principal of my school wrote books through which he opened my eyes towards multiple social issues that need to be addressed, and my tutoring experience with children from very diverse backgrounds and aptitude, instilled in me a desire to work for change in education system. I heard about Teach For Nepal during my first year of Bachelors. As I eagerly waited to be qualified to apply, I got involved with Volunteer Services Overseas (VSO) through which I was able to learn directly about education in Nepal and the lack in sense of urgency towards its improvement. Now that I am selected as a Teach For Nepal Fellow, …

I was born and raised in a Maithili family in Biratnagar, Nepal. Growing up, I was very fond of school and was always surrounded by smart and dedicated teachers. After passing School Leaving Certi cate as a topper of Orchid Public School, I joined Model College in Biratnagar to complete my +2 and later left for Kathmandu to spend the next chapter of my life as a Law Student in Nepal Law Campus. My teachers have always been an influence on me and did much to change my inner development as a person. This led me to join Commonwealth Youth Peace Ambassadors Network (CYPAN) where I mentored a few underperforming students at a local public school. There, I came across students from diverse backgrounds, deprived of education and basic necessities. Some couldn’t even recognize alphabets or do the basic calculation as they were seen nothing more than a supporting individual to household budgets. This experience put me in a place that forced me to care for issues that were bigger than myself…

I am the youngest in the family of 13 and basically got whatever I wished for. I never had to worry about my family’s financial status because my parents always fulfilled my wishes as long as I was able to attain good grades. Since I was from an affluent family, I was able to pursue my Bachelor’s in International Business and Media from Webster University in Thailand. After my bachelor’s I decided to join my father’s business. I have always believed that we should always challenge ourselves everyday but after joining my father in his office, the only challenge I got during my time was from Defense of the Ancients (DotA), a computer-based game. I was looking for paths to avoid boredom and was skimming through the daily newspaper, that is when I stumbled across a notice that said, “What if your first job was changing the nation?” The notice piqued my interest. After finding out about Teach For Nepal’s movement to transform communities and country, I applied right away. Being a kin…

My family believes that education helps to establish a successful life. Their dream has always been to make sure that all three of their children were well educated because they had to struggle a lot for not being educated enough. My father, being the sole financial provider of the family, spent most part of his life in a foreign country. Although he faced many difficulties he always made sure that we got an excellent education to be successful in life. While pursuing my Bachelor’s in Engineering in Srinivas Institute of Technology, India, I volunteered to advocate the importance of voting. During that time, I realized how powerful role an individual has to bring change in a community. After graduation, I started teaching underprivileged children who attend public school in my hometown. There I came to understand the harsh realities of children who go to public school and how they lag behind in basic educational achievements. I was looking for opportunities where I could be p…

I was born in Kathmandu but had to face mountains of hurdles as I was born in a middle-income family. My parents faced financial difficulties as they weren’t highly educated and had to work harder just to provide a proper meal for themselves. Despite economic hardship, I and my brother managed to finish our secondary examination from Paribodh Boarding High School, Dhobighat. I faced another mountain of a hurdle after SLC as I was striving for higher education. I had to pass through different levels of ups and downs while pursuing my Intermediate but stayed strong and on a course. After passing my Intermediate, I wanted to pursue a degree in medical science but was unable to pursue due to financial difficulties in the family. I had to sacrifice my dream of practicing medicine and focus on Bachelor’s degree in Zoology. I enrolled in Tri-Chandra Campus and was surprised on my first day when I saw more than a hundred students sitting in a single classroom. During my campus life, I deci…

My parents have always been a great inspiration for me. Their hardship, their struggles, and their sacrifices to support their family have always motivated me to give my best in everything I do. Growing up in an average income family, I have seen my parents work day and night to provide me and my brother with the best education so that one day we would be successful in life. Education has always been a primary concern for my parents who taught me that if I need to succeed in life, I have to be educated. They sent me to private school even though it was financially difficult for them. And during my Bachelor’s in Food Technology in Padmashree International College, I started tutoring so that I could lend a hand on the financial burden that my parent was facing. Today, our country is facing an uphill battle. As we move towards the future where education is necessary for achieving high mobility, our country is falling behind because of inequality of education between private and pub…
