10 lakhs in quality education instead of a Wedding

Bibhusan Shakya and Shilva Shrestha who are currently pursuing their education in the United States donated $10,000 (10 Lakhs) from their wedding expense to Teach For Nepal to provide quality education to children in Nepal.

Shakya who moved to the US in 2004 in pursuit of his education had been closely following the work of Teach For Nepal since its establishment. “Contributing towards Teach For Nepal work was one of my dreams and by investing in the educational sector I feel that I can change the lives of many students," said Shakya.

Shakya who studied in some of the top schools and universities in Nepal and the US says, he personally experienced the value of quality education he received from Rato Bangla School and St. Xavier's Schools. In 2013, he completed his PhD in Physics from Cornell University and is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at University of Michigan.

Shrestha who was born in Kathmandu’s Shankamul is currently doing her PhD in Biology in the University of Michigan. Shrestha expresses although dowry system has been reduced in Nepal, a lot of money is spent on gold during the marriage to show off which she thinks is unnecessary and this action is a step to end that age-old tradition. “We both are still studying and we believe that our action will influence other to give towards the betterment of our country.”

While in the US, they had learned about Teach For America and the work Teach For America was doing. Their Fellows were teaching the students from the lower-socio-economic neighbourhood. The two were very inspired by Teach For America and wished something similar would happen in Nepal as well. When they heard that Teach For Nepal was providing quality education to the students from rural parts of Nepal they decided to donate their saving towards Teach For Nepal's movement.

Expressing his satisfaction, Shakya adds, “When we help others we get a feeling of satisfaction and happiness and we experience a surge of energy and purposefulness. We feel transformed.”
